If you are looking for a high-quality lawnmower, the Ferris 500S zero turn is an excellent option. A mower that is new to the Ferris lineup in 2021. This mower has commercial-like performance, the Ferris 500S offers all the bells and whistles you get when using its higher-priced counterparts.
Nevertheless, if you are investing in a premium quality lawnmower, you should take the time to learn as much as you can about it before purchasing. With that in mind, the following is the Ferris 500S zero turn mower review.

When compared to the Ferris 400S, the 500S Zero Turn, this mower comes out on top in many ways. The Ferris 500S model is pricier, but the Briggs & Stratton model has a mower that is slightly more powerful. Unlike the 400S, there are 52″ and 61″ models offered on the 500S. The 52″ and 61″ models have Hydro-gear ZT3100 which is a slight upgrade over the ZT-2800.
The Ferris 500S also has some nice accessory upgrades including the seat, LED headlights, and better engine protection. The deck also has a couple of updates on the appearance and features a step spot to get on the mower.
The only complaint of the 500S is the fuel tank. I'm not sure why Ferris chose to go with a 3 gallon fuel tank. The rest of the lineup including the 400S, IS600, and IS700 all have 5.5 gallon tanks. This could give reason to upgrade to the IS600 mower for a few hundred dollars more.
Specifications
Now that we've seen how this mower measures up to the 400S, let's look at the various specifications and features of this lawnmower.
Power
Complete with commercial-grade power, the engines were built to include premium quality dust and particle filtration. It also has an advanced debris management system. This makes it ideal for mowing lawns in a wide array of areas and climates. It is compelling for an entry-level machine.
Notable Features
Here are the main features of the Ferris 500S:
- Patented Suspension: This model also comes complete with a patented suspension that includes an independent rear coil. This means there is less of a need to worry about uneven terrain and can focus on getting the job done.
- Fabricated Bumper: The Ferris 500S includes a fabricated steel/tubular bumper that protects the engine while also making it easier to access for service. It also accepts an array of attachments, such as a bagging or tow/hitch system.
- Hydro-gear® ZT-2800® or ZT-3100®: This mower includes a Hydro-gear® ZT-2800® (48″) or ZT-3100® (52″ or 61″) allowing users to reach up to 8.5 MPH.
Cut Quality
The cut quality of the Ferris 500S is impressive. It offers a neat, clean, even cut, no matter how tall the grass may be or how uneven the land may be. The only thing that would make the cut quality better is if it had a slope nose deck style instead of a flat nose design. You would have to upgrade to the IS700 or ISX800 and spend a thousand or more extra.
Durability
Although it's not quite a commercial mower, it is designed in such a way that makes it highly durable and reliable. With proper maintenance and care, this mower can last for many years on end. Many aspects of this mower are definitely commercially inspired. Even the ZT3100 transaxles on the 52″ and 61″ models are considered commercial grade by Hydro-Gear's standards.
Comfort
Perhaps one of the top features is its comfortability. Complete with super comfortably cushioned seats and armrests, comfort was a top priority when this mower was designed. Outside of the updated seat, the mower features the normal pivoting front axles and rear suspension that has been on several other models for years. This is probably one of the most comfortable mowers in this range of zero turn mowers.
Aesthetics
Although it does not have the appearance of an upscale commercial mower, its aesthetics are definitely a good feature. The look of it is sleek and professional. Nevertheless, it is not as attractive as the latest, most expensive models.
Build Quality
The build quality of this lawnmower is excellent as it has many of the features and capabilities of the commercial models. In addition, it is very sturdy and built for regular use. Ferris has been around a long time and they stand behind all of their mowers. They have solid warranties and their mowers have stood the test of time for years.
Pros and Cons
When it comes to the pros and cons of this mower, some of them are:
Pros
- Ease of use
- Large rear wheels and front casters make for better traction
- Lots of attachments and accessories
- Improved seat
- LED lights
- New rear bumper to protect engine
- Suspension

You may want to go up one model to get the Hydro Gear 3100 series[COMMERCIAL GRADE] instead of the 2800 series. You are cutting many acres.
The 500S is a high quality and comfortable mower. I’ve spent a lot of time on those.
Should`ve made it with a floating deck. We have hilly areas in our lawn leading up to the roadway. Our lawn has never looked so bad.
